Three auditoriums in one organisation — the 1,300-seat Lyric for the big touring musicals, the 200-seat Drum and the 50-seat Lab — plus a workshop across town where sets and costumes are actually built. It is one of the few regional theatres that makes as much as it receives.
The building
Plymouth has had a Theatre Royal since 1813, when John Foulston's neo-classical block at the bottom of George Street seated 1,192. The present building, Peter Moro's, dates from 1982 and sits on Derry's Cross; a £7 million rebuild of the front of house finished in 2013 and added the Lab.
The seven-metre bronze outside — a crouching actor, called Messenger — went up in 2019 and is now the easiest way to describe where to meet.
