Cats
The pitch was unfundable. A sung-through musical with no plot, based on a book of light verse a poet wrote for his godchildren in 1939, in which the performers are cats. Andrew Lloyd Webber mortgaged his house to help pay for it.

It opened at the New London Theatre on 11 May 1981 and closed twenty-one years later to the day, after 8,949 performances. Broadway ran it for 7,485. For seventeen years it was the longest-running musical London had ever had, and for a stretch it was the longest-running show on Broadway too.
