The third building to carry the name, and the only one built as a theatre. It cost £25.6 million and came in within budget, which for a theatre is the rarer achievement of the two.
Three Marlowes
The first was a pre-war theatre on St Margaret’s Street that became a cinema in the 1920s, took the Marlowe name in 1949 and closed in 1981.
The second was the Friars Cinema, built in 1933 for Oscar Deutsch’s Odeon chain, which held the world premiere of A Canterbury Tale on 11 May 1944 and reopened as a theatre in July 1984 after the city council spent £2.35 million on it.
