Scotland’s oldest working theatre, home of Scottish Opera, and the largest surviving auditorium by Charles J. Phipps in Britain — which it is only because it burned down twice and he rebuilt it twice.
Two fires and a third
Fire destroyed the auditorium in 1879 and Phipps rebuilt it in French Renaissance style. Fire destroyed it again in 1895, and he rebuilt it a second time — in six months, and with so few changes that the room reads as one design rather than two.
A third fire, in November 1969, burned for a few hours and cost the life of a firefighter. Scottish Television, then working out of the building, moved to Edinburgh while it was repaired.
