A concert hall sharing a building with Nottingham's Theatre Royal, opened in 1982 with Elton John on the first night. It stands where Frank Matcham's Empire Palace of 1898 stood until the road-wideners took it in 1969.
The building
RHWL, the practice behind the Sheffield Crucible and Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, designed it; work started in 1980 and finished two years later. The modern block opposite the Theatre Royal's portico is a deliberate contrast, and the two share a foyer and a box office.
It is a concert hall rather than a lyric theatre, which is why the musicals that play it are the ones that travel with a concert staging rather than a full set.
