Alfred Darbyshire built it, Frank Matcham redecorated it five years later, and Bertie Crewe rebuilt the inside in 1913 — three architects on one auditorium, which is why it does not read as the work of any of them. It takes the touring musicals too big for the Opera House down the road.
Inside the Palace Theatre
A German bomb hit it directly in September 1940, during the Manchester Blitz, and it kept working. The 1,955 seats it has now are the remainder of a house that once held far more — the 1913 rebuild alone took it down to 2,600.
