Manchester has two receiving houses of nearly the same size and uses both. The Palace on Oxford Street seats 1,955 and the Opera House on Quay Street 1,920, and between them they take everything that tours; the Opera House spent five years as a bingo hall before the Palace Trust bought it back in 1984.
One show to each, and both sold through ATG: Cats at the Palace in November 2026, Chicago at the Opera House the following May.

Manchester Opera House
It has been the New Theatre, the New Queen's Theatre, the Opera House and, for five years from 1979, a bingo hall. The Palace Trust bought it back in 1984, and 1,920 seats on Quay Street now take the largest touring musicals to reach Manchester.

Palace Theatre
Alfred Darbyshire built it, Frank Matcham redecorated it five years later, and Bertie Crewe rebuilt the inside in 1913 — three architects on one auditorium, which is why it does not read as the work of any of them. It takes the touring musicals too big for the Opera House down the road.
