A theatre has stood on this corner of George Street since 1836, and the first one was barred from staging plays during university terms — so it put on concerts and music hall instead. The present Art Deco house, 1,785 seats, opened in 1934 and spent twenty-six years called the Apollo.
The building
The second New Theatre was opened by the Oxford University Dramatic Society in February 1886 with Twelfth Night, after townspeople and university members raised the money for a house both could use. The Dorrill family managed it until 1972.
The building in use now dates from 1933. Its original scheme was deep brown with gilt friezes; a multicoloured one arrived around 1980. It takes musicals, comedy and concerts, and the capacity puts it among the larger touring houses in the south.
