Milton Keynes Theatre

The ceiling moves. It can be raised or lowered and the seating rearranged, so the auditorium runs anywhere from 900 to 1,400 seats depending on what is playing — a design decision taken after a campaign for a theatre in Milton Keynes that lasted twenty-five years.

The building

Arup Acoustics built a 1:50 scale model of the room to work out what the moving ceiling would do to the sound before it was installed. The result takes a full-scale musical one week and a small drama the next without either sounding wrong.

ATG was appointed to run the theatre in 1998, a year before it opened, and still does.

Opening dates, capacities and architects on this page come from the theatre's own history pages and from Wikipedia.
