King's Theatre

Frank Matcham built it in 1904 as the sister house to the Theatre Royal across town, and Historic Environment Scotland calls it an important example of an Edwardian theatre. Four levels, 1,785 seats, and a pantomime every year since long before anyone reading this was born.

The building

Howard & Wyndham built it under Baillie Michael Simons and ran it until 1967, when Glasgow Corporation bought it. The council still owns the building and leases it to ATG.

It is a receiving house — touring musicals, dance, comedy — and it also gives local amateur companies a professional stage, which is rarer than it sounds for a theatre of this size.
