His Majesty’s Theatre

Granite-clad, Matcham-designed and the largest theatre in the north-east of Scotland, looking across Rosemount Viaduct at Union Terrace Gardens. It was built to one man's specification: Robert Arthur wanted a house of his own after fifteen years of leasing other people's.
The building
Arthur submitted plans for the Rosemount Viaduct site in 1901 and opened the finished theatre in December 1906. His company ran out of money in 1912; the theatre passed through the Tivoli's managing director and then, in 1932, to Councillor James F. Donald, who refurbished it and put neon on the front.
The city council owns it now and Aberdeen Performing Arts programmes it. More than 1,400 seats makes it the only room in the region that takes a full touring musical.
