His Majesty's Theatre is the largest house in the north-east of Scotland, granite-clad and Matcham-designed, looking across Rosemount Viaduct at Union Terrace Gardens. It was built to one man's specification — Robert Arthur wanted a theatre of his own after fifteen years of leasing other people's.
