Winter Garden Theatre

1,600 seats

One of the three Broadway theatres that actually stands on Broadway, built inside a horse exchange. Evita begins previews here on 27 February 2027.

Inside the Winter Garden Theatre

The building began as the American Horse Exchange, finished in 1896, and the Shubert brothers turned it into a theatre that opened in 1911. Herbert J. Krapp remodelled it completely in 1922, and his auditorium is the one standing now: wide rather than deep, with a single balcony, two tiers of boxes and an interior that is a New York City landmark.

Its stage and backstage are why big musicals end up here. From 1982 to 2013 the Winter Garden held only two productions — Cats, for eighteen years, and then Mamma Mia!

The address is 1634 Broadway, which makes it one of only three Broadway theatres that are actually on Broadway. It belongs to the Shubert Organization, and its seats are sold by Telecharge, the Shubert box office.

Opening dates, capacities and architects on this page come from the theatre's own history pages and from Wikipedia.
