Nineteen hundred seats, the largest house the Nederlander Organization runs on Broadway, and the only address Wicked has ever had. Its rotunda holds the Theater Hall of Fame.
Inside the Gershwin Theatre
The Gershwin is the biggest room on this list by some distance: 1,900 seats, against 1,648 at the Palace and 1,125 at the Ambassador. It opened in 1972 and is one of the Nederlander Organization’s nine Broadway theatres.
Its rotunda was built to house the Theater Hall of Fame — the names and photographs of the people the profession has elected to it are on the walls a ticketholder walks past on the way in, which is a use for a lobby almost no other theatre has found.
Wicked opened here on 30 October 2003 and has never played anywhere else in New York. A theatre of this size is part of why: the show needs the flying rig, the dragon over the proscenium and the depth to put a whole Emerald City on stage, and there are not many Broadway houses that can hold it.
