Inside the Todd Haimes Theatre

Edgar and Archibald Selwyn opened it in 1918 under their own name. After Arch Selwyn went bankrupt in 1934 it became a cinema, and it stayed one for most of the next five decades before Roundabout Theatre Company brought it back to the stage; it was later known as the American Airlines Theatre before taking the name of Roundabout's longtime artistic director.

The six-storey Selwyn Building that once stood in front of it on 42nd Street collapsed at the end of 1997. The auditorium itself is on 43rd Street, fan-shaped, in blue and gold, and is now reached through the glass front of the New 42nd Street building.

At 740 seats it is about half the size of the big musical houses. The city and state of New York own it and lease it to New 42nd Street. Roundabout is a non-profit that sells its seasons as subscription packages first, and its runs are limited engagements.

Opening dates, capacities and architects on this page come from the theatre's own history pages and from Wikipedia.
