Inside the St. James Theatre
Two musicals that changed what a musical was opened on this stage. Oklahoma! opened here in 1943 and The King and I in 1951, and in 1964 so did Hello, Dolly! — which is worth knowing before a different Dolly opens here in December 2026.
The building went up in 1927 for A. L. Erlanger, who named it after himself; Warren and Wetmore, the firm behind Grand Central Terminal, designed it in a neo-Georgian style, and both the facade and the auditorium are New York City landmarks. It took the St. James name in 1932.
With up to 1,709 seats across three levels it is one of the largest houses on Broadway — nearly three times the Hayes, six doors down the same block. It is operated by ATG Entertainment, which is also where its tickets are sold.
