The largest theatre in the south of England outside London, and a building that spent thirty-six years as a cinema in the middle of its life.
Empire, Gaumont, Mayflower
It played as the Empire until 1950 and as the Gaumont until 1986, then reopened under its present name on 24 February 1987 with Peter Pan.
A three-month closure in the summer of 2018 replaced 1,659 seats in the stalls and circle and redecorated the auditorium.
