Inside the Majestic Theatre
The Phantom of the Opera opened here in 1988 and closed in 2023, by then the longest-running production in Broadway history. Before it, Carousel, South Pacific, The Music Man, Camelot, A Little Night Music and The Wiz all opened on this stage.
Irwin S. Chanin built it in 1927 as one piece of a theatre-and-hotel complex, together with what are now the Bernard B. Jacobs and John Golden theatres and the Lincoln Hotel, all designed by Herbert J. Krapp. The Shuberts have run it since 1930, and both the facade and the interior are New York City landmarks.
With 1,681 seats on two levels it was always meant for large musicals. The orchestra is raked so steeply that its back rows sit a storey above the street. Tickets are sold by Telecharge.
Opening dates, capacities and architects on this page come from the theatre's own history pages and from Wikipedia.
