Les Misérables
The reviews were bad. When the Royal Shakespeare Company opened Les Misérables at the Barbican on 8 October 1985, the critics filed a verdict close to unanimous, and the box office spent the next morning taking the busiest bookings the company had ever seen. The public simply overruled them.

It moved to the Palace Theatre that December, moved to the Sondheim in 2004, and has not closed once in between — through the bombing anniversary of its own theatre, a rebuilt production in 2019 and a global pandemic. It passed its 14,000th London performance in September 2019, and it is the longest-running musical in the West End.
