Newcastle's Theatre Royal is Grade I listed, which almost no working theatre is, and it is the centrepiece of Richard Grainger's Grey Street. The inside is not the 1837 original: a fire after a performance of Macbeth in 1899 gutted it, and audiences now sit in Frank Matcham's replacement, finished on the last day of 1901.

It is also where a tour comes to end. Cats plays its final twelve nights here in June 2027 and then stops.
