Jesus Christ Superstar
What Jesus Christ Superstar actually is
It covers the last days of Jesus's life, from the entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion, and it is sung throughout. The point of view is often Judas's: the opening number is his, and the show treats his doubts as an argument rather than as plain betrayal.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote it first as a concept album in 1970; the stage version followed on Broadway in 1971 and in London in 1972. “I Don't Know How to Love Him” and “Superstar” are the songs people know.
This staging began at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, directed by Timothy Sheader with choreography by Drew McOnie and design by Tom Scutt, and played the London Palladium from 20 June to 5 September 2026 before the move to Drury Lane.
